Never ever distribute literature in anything that is being used as a mail box. A postal employee once told me that it is against federal law (he named the law) to put anything in a mailbox or in anything being used as a mailbox. That includes a slot in the door or a basket on the porch. He said, You can legally put literature behind the mail box, under the mailbox or over the mail box but you can't put it IN the mail box. I found out the hard way that if you put any controversial literature anywhere near a mailbox, you will get complainers saying that you put it "in" their mail box and you will have to go talk to the post master.
