Havana, August 15 (acn) Cuba is paving the way for its general
elections, which will take place on October following the training of
citizens who will make up the electoral commissions in all districts and
municipalities throughout the island.

The commissions are made up of volunteers from different walks of life
who are responsible for organizing the local meetings where candidates
are nominated --without the mediation of the Cuban Communist Party--
reports the PL news agency.

The meetings will start on September 1 and conclude late that month with
the selection of the candidates for delegates to the municipal assemblies.

According to the Granma newspaper, the commissions include experienced
members, though most of the volunteers are young people who will
participate in this activity for the first time.

/"That's why it's so important to train the youngsters; so that they
become familiar with Cuba's electoral laws and other current
regulations,"/ pointed out Pedro Chavez, head of one of the districts in
the municipality of Playa, in Havana.

The Cuban government formally called for general elections on July 9.
The first stage entails the appointment of municipal delegates, while
the provincial delegates and the parliamentary deputies will be elected
in the second stage.
